Alex Condon Named to Prestigious NABC Player of the Year Watch List

Alex Condon is one of 20 on the NABC's preseason national player of the year watch list.

Florida men’s basketball junior Alex Condon has earned a spot on the National Association of Basketball Coaches preseason watch list for the 2026 NABC Division I Player of the Year Award.

This recognition adds to Condon’s growing list of preseason honors, which already include AP All-America and first-team All-SEC accolades.

The Gators will open their season on Monday, Nov. 3, against Arizona in the Hall of Fame Series Las Vegas.

Charting the Gators: Florida’s Rare Ranked Season Openers

The No. 3 Florida men's basketball team will play 2025-26 season opener (and first game as reigning NCAA champions) Monday night at T-Mobile Arena, home to NHL Las Vegas Knights, against 13th-ranked Arizona.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Todd Golden ’s commitment to analytics – from in-game strategy and scouting to recruiting and scheduling – quickly had him shaking his head early in his Florida tenure.

Golden was introduced as UF’s coach on March 18, 2022, and soon after reviewed the slate of games already contracted for his first season. The Gators were set for a road trip to Florida State, three high-major contests in the PK85 at Portland, a home matchup against rising Connecticut, and a neutral-site clash with Oklahoma.

Ooof.

Still, the game that stood out most to Golden from one of the toughest non-conference schedules in program history was the third of three consecutive home openers: Nov. 14 vs. Florida Atlantic.

Golden’s reaction to seeing a KenPom.com top-130 team from the prior year coming to Gainesville was essentially, "Who the hell scheduled this?"

The answer was the previous staff. Mike White, as professional courtesy often dictates, extended a favor to Dusty May, his former assistant who departed for FAU in 2017. White offered May a marquee, in-state opponent on the road. By the time the matchup arrived, White had moved on, and May didn’t return the favor. Instead, he brought his fifth Owls squad to Exactech Arena/O’Connell Center and handed Golden’s debut Gators a 76-74 defeat.

That FAU team went on to finish 35-4 and reach the Final Four. Since then, Florida has scheduled strictly to Golden’s specifications: home games against analytically lower-ranked opponents, no home-and-home series with power-conference programs, and strong neutral-site contests designed to bolster the KenPom resume.

Which leads to Monday’s opener against 13th-ranked Arizona at the grand T-Mobile Center in Las Vegas.

"Hard to turn down an opener like that on national TV," UF assistant coach Jonathan Safir - Men's Basketball Coach - Florida Gators said. "Even if it means going cross-country."

And that’s only the beginning. The matchup places Florida against its seventh ranked season-opening opponent – and the highest in 25 years. Looking at the broader picture, UF’s 2025-26 pre-Southeastern Conference schedule – FSU at home; Miami in Jacksonville; a Thanksgiving tournament in San Diego featuring Wisconsin, Providence, and Texas Christian; at Duke; UConn in New York City; and George Washington in Sunrise, Florida – may prove even more ambitious than Golden’s first year.

That approach fits the reigning NCAA champions and reflects the Gators’ philosophy on scheduling.

Inside-Out Impact: Thomas Haugh Thrives on the Wing

A new role as a small forward won't alter the emotional game of fiery junior Thomas Haugh, one of the (many) heroes of UF's run to the 2025 NCAA championship last April.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Just days before the official start of fall practice, Thomas Haugh sat comfortably in a chair inside the Hathcock Basketball Complex, chatting with a few Florida teammates while observing another group of Gators running through shooting drills.

Known for his constant smile and approachable demeanor, Haugh greeted a visitor with a nod and light conversation before the topic inevitably shifted to basketball. Recently, another college basketball analyst took to social media to express doubts about the 6-foot-9, 215-pound Haugh—one of the standout figures from the Gators' remarkable NCAA Tournament run last spring—transitioning from the power forward "4" role he had played for two seasons to the wing "3" spot on the perimeter as he enters his junior year.

"A lot of the so-called experts, Tommy, aren't sure you can do it."

Haugh simply shrugged at the remark, treating it like an easy pitch.

"Who cares?" he replied with a grin.

Inside the Hathcock Basketball Complex, nobody seemed concerned. The outside critics are likely the same voices who insisted the Gators lacked a point guard last season. And we all saw how that turned out.

It’s safe to say that UF coach Todd Golden and his staff have more than earned the benefit of the doubt when it comes to roster construction, particularly with their success in the transfer portal. Golden also has a clear knack for making things happen on the court, where he remains committed to a two-big system. The vision for Haugh to eventually shift from the paint to the wing has been in place since the Gators signed the lean, energetic, high-motor prospect out of his elite Pennsylvania prep school three years ago. Comparisons to Chandler Parsons began almost immediately.

Now, Haugh’s growth and progression have lined up seamlessly with the position of the third-ranked Gators as they head into the 2025-26 season, opening Monday night against No. 13 Arizona in the Hall of Fame Series at Las Vegas. A large contingent of NBA scouts will be at T-Mobile Arena, many of whom already project Haugh as a small forward at the next level. They conveyed that to him during his brief stint last spring in the NBA evaluation process.

"He's going to be a really impactful player at that spot," UF junior forward and close friend Alex Condon said.

As a freshman, Haugh averaged 3.9 points and 3.7 rebounds in 15 minutes per game. By his sophomore year, he raised those numbers to 9.8 points and 6.1 rebounds, while also boosting his shooting efficiency—improving by 9% from beyond the arc and nearly 34% at the free-throw line. That season, Haugh established himself as one of the nation’s premier sixth men and delivered some of the most crucial shots during the Gators’ remarkable championship run.

In the team’s two preseason scrimmages this month—victories over Florida International and No. 17 Illinois—Haugh averaged 17.0 points and 6.5 rebounds. He shot 61% from the field, nearly 36% from beyond the arc, and converted all seven of his free throws in his first live action at the wing position, a spot held almost exclusively (and impressively) the past two seasons by guard Will Richard , now with the NBA Golden State Warriors. Haugh’s trademark long, wiry, and relentless defense remained a key part of his game.

"Yeah, it does feel different because I'm out in the corner a lot, but honestly, it's felt pretty natural," said Haugh, who has shifted from the high-low action he played almost exclusively as a freshman and sophomore to ball screens and face-up opportunities outside the paint in halfcourt sets. "At first, it was hard just knowing where to go and finding the right spots, but I'm used to it now."

Golden noted that a casual basketball observer might struggle to distinguish between "Tommy the 4" and "Tommy the 3" because of Haugh’s style of play—always hard, always in the thick of the action.

"You'll see a lot of the same things with Tommy that made him such an impactful, winning player last year," Golden said, adding that Haugh will still see some possessions in the post throughout the season. "Bottom line, he's going to be around the ball a lot. I think his effort, hustle and winning plays will be on display as often as they were before. The one difference may be his propensity for taking more perimeter shots, but other than that a lot of the same things will show up."

One of the biggest changes—perhaps less for Haugh individually than for the team—will be the Gators having three members of what is arguably the nation’s best front court on the floor at once. With Haugh moving to the "3," the team gains that advantage, positioning itself to at least match its standing as the nation’s No. 5 offensive rebounding squad last season (38.5%), and potentially improve with a rotation featuring Haugh, Condon, 6-11, 265-pound Rueben Chinyelu , or 7-1, 265-pound Micah Handlogten logging significant minutes together.

"Just naturally, there probably won't be as many defensive rebound opportunities for him because those [other two bigs] are going to be close to the rim," Golden said. "But I think he'll have plenty of games where he's stuffing the stat sheet in the rebounding column."

Last season, Haugh recorded five double-digit rebounding performances, including a career-best-tying 11 boards in the Elite Eight win over third-seeded and ninth-ranked Texas Tech. He also scored 20 points in that game, knocking down four 3-pointers, with two coming during the rally from a 12-point deficit in the final seven minutes.

His dedication to working in the gym showed up in his freshman year (25.4% from 3 and 46.7% from the free-throw line) to sophomore season (34.0 from 3 and 79.4 at the line).

In the analytics realm—where Golden’s Gators thrive—Haugh ranked as the 13th-best player nationally (and sixth in the Southeastern Conference) in overall offensive efficiency. He also placed 206th in the country (6th in SEC) in offensive rebounding percentage at 10.7.

Haugh closed last season fifth on the team in scoring, third in rebounding, fourth in steals and 3-point percentage, and third in blocks, while averaging 24.4 minutes per game. This year, expect Haugh—widely regarded as the best-conditioned athlete on the roster—to log 33-34 minutes per contest, still playing at his trademark 110 mph pace.

"We expect him to be out there a lot," Golden said.

For the Gators to reach their full potential, Haugh must continue to be a perimeter threat. He shot 34.0% from three-point range last season on 103 attempts. By comparison, Richard connected at 35.9% on 223 attempts. The message is clear: keep firing, young man.

"Shooting is what I've really focused on. I have to be really comfortable shooting the ball," said Haugh, who spent the summer in the gym, with the results already evident in live action. "Defenses have to respect my shot. That will open up space, get them to close out and allow me to cut and make plays."

And then, of course, comes the defensive side of the game.

Don't expect a more seasoned and stronger Thomas Haugh to shy away from the new defensive challenges he'll face on the perimeter.

The skeptics mentioned earlier will be watching closely to see how Haugh handles defending more skilled face-the-basket players compared to traditional low-post matchups. That shouldn’t pose a problem. Throughout last season, Haugh was tasked with switching in the halfcourt against opponents across the "1" through "5" positions. Thanks to his size, athleticism, and relentless effort, he’s proven capable of guarding them all. Staying sharp in transition defense against quicker players will also be essential.

"I'll just take it all as a challenge," he said. "Some guys will be quicker, some guys will be bigger. I'm good with all of it."

It’s the perfect response, especially since his team is counting on Haugh to be very good—if not great—in his new role.

Xaivian Lee is one of 20 players named to the Jerry West Award preseason watch list.

Florida men's basketball senior XaivianLee has been named to the Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Top 20 Preseason List, the Basketball Hall of Fame announced on Tuesday. The West Award is part of the Naismith Starting 5 positional awards.

A two-time first-team All-Ivy League performer at Princeton, Lee transferred to UF this offseason after averaging 16.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 5.5 assists last season. A Toronto native, Lee has tallied 1,154 points, 406 rebounds, 302 assists and 124 3-point field goals in three career seasons entering 2025-26.

Lee joins backcourt mate Boogie Fland as a preseason Naismith Starting 5 honoree, with Fland named to the Bob Cousy Award watch list on Monday. The West Award has been presented since 2015, and the Gators' Alijah Martin was on last season's midseason watch list.

Fland Earns Bob Cousy Watch List Honor as Gators Gear Up

Florida men's basketball sophomore guard B oogie Fland has earned a spot on the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Top 20 Preseason List, as announced Monday by the Basketball Hall of Fame. The Cousy Award is one of the Naismith Starting 5 positional honors.

Fland joined UF this offseason after posting 13.5 points and 5.1 assists with a 3.72 assist-to-turnover ratio across 21 games during his freshman year at Arkansas. The Bronx, N.Y., native also received preseason second-team All-SEC recognition from media voters.

The Cousy Award has been presented annually since 2004, and the Gators' Walter Clayton Jr. was one of the five finalists for the 2024-25 season.

Liv McGill Earns All‑SEC Second Team Honors for Florida Gators

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southeastern Conference announced Wednesday that sophomore guard Liv McGill has been selected to the 2025–26 Preseason All‑SEC Second Team.

McGill made an immediate impact during her freshman campaign, emerging as a vital contributor in the starting lineup. She led the Gators in scoring with an average of 16.5 points per game and set a program record for most points in a freshman season with 611. Her performance helped Florida reach the Quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament. GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Six months after capturing a national championship, men's basketball head coach Todd Golden and starting forward Alex Condon are set to appear on Gator Talk, presented by Dream Finders Homes, on Thursday. They will be joined by the Voice of the Gators, Sean Kelly, as they look ahead to the 2025-26 season, which begins Nov. 3 in Las Vegas.

All attendees will receive 10% off all non-discounted items at Miller's Ale House, where the Thursday night special features prime rib.

After cutting down the nets last season, Golden became the youngest head coach to lead his team to a national championship since Jim Valvano in 1983. Under his direction, the Gators ended the year on a 12-game winning streak, highlighted by victories over nine top-25 opponents, including No. 1 seeds Auburn and Houston.

Condon, named Monday to the five-man preseason Associated Press All-America team, returns as Florida's leading scorer from last season. During the 2024-25 campaign, the Perth, Australia native averaged 10.6 points and recorded seven double-doubles.

Florida football interim head coach Billy Gonzales , along with select football student-athletes, will headline four of the five remaining shows. Each episode will air from 7-8 p.m.

New Florida volleyball head coach Ryan Theis made his Gator Talk debut on Sept. 25.

Gator Talk is a weekly, hour-long program that highlights the latest in Gator athletics. The show airs across all 38 affiliates of the Gator Sports Network from LEARFIELD , as well as on the Florida Gators Mobile App and the Varsity Mobile App .

Gators Surge to No. 3: Florida Earns Elite Preseason Ranking

Florida men's basketball enters the season ranked third in the preseason USA TODAY Sports Coaches poll, which was released on Wednesday . The Gators also picked up one first-place vote.

This is the third instance in program history that Florida has earned a top-five preseason ranking (No. 5 in 2001-02; No. 1 in 2006-07) and the 12th time the team has opened a season inside the coaches' top 10. The poll is determined by voters representing each of the 32 Division I conferences that receive an automatic NCAA tournament bid.

Florida’s schedule includes nine matchups against eight teams ranked in the preseason top 25, with a possible 10th game against Wisconsin at the Rady Children's Invitational. Four more 2025-26 opponents are listed among those receiving votes.

Florida also landed at t hird in the AP preseason poll . The Gators begin the 2025-26 campaign against Arizona at the Hall of Fame Series Las Vegas on Nov. 3.

With three NBA Draft selections this year, the Gators head into the 2025-26 campaign featuring nine players on NBA opening day rosters.

Walter Clayton Jr. (Jazz), Alijah Martin (Raptors two-way) and Will Richard (Warriors) all entered the NBA following last season’s national championship run. Meanwhile, Bradley Beal (Clippers), Dorian Finney-Smith (Rockets) and Al Horford (Warriors) each joined new teams during the offseason.

Andrew Nembhard continues his tenure with the defending Eastern Conference champion Indiana Pacers. Tre Mann begins his fifth NBA season with the Charlotte Hornets and Colin Castleton recently secured a two-way contract with the Orlando Magic.

Beyond the nine players set for the 2025-26 season, the Gators also feature numerous former players, coaches and staff members holding roles across NBA coaching staffs and front offices.

The NBA season opens Tuesday evening with Finney-Smith’s Rockets facing the Thunder, followed by Horford and Richard’s Warriors taking on the Lakers.

Alex Condon Earns Preseason AP All-America Honors for Florida Gators

Alex Condon becomes the first Gator since Joakim Noah to earn preseason AP All-America recognition.

Florida junior Alex Condon has been selected to the five-man preseason Associated Press All-America team, the AP announced Monday.

Condon, the Gators’ leading returning scorer from last season with 10.6 points per game, also earned a first-team All-SEC honor and Blue Ribbon Yearbook first-team All-America recognition this preseason. The Perth, Australia native recorded seven double-doubles during Florida’s 2024-25 national championship run, and his 103 offensive rebounds ranked as the third-most in a single season in program history.

Florida has produced only one first-team All-America honoree in its history, with Walter Clayton Jr. earning the distinction for his 2024-25 performance. The last Gator to receive preseason AP All-America recognition was Joakim Noah ahead of the 2006-07 season.

Condon joins Braden Smith (Purdue, unanimous selection), JT Toppin (Texas Tech), Yaxel Lendeborg (Michigan), and AJ Dybantsa (BYU) on the Associated Press preseason team.

No. 3-ranked Florida begins its 2025-26 campaign on Monday, Nov. 3, against 13th-ranked Arizona in the Hall of Fame Series Las Vegas. The Gators will host their home opener on Nov. 6 at 8 p.m. versus North Florida.
