GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Women's Basketball Team (9-2) continues its five-game December homestand on Sunday, Dec. 14 with a matchup against West Georgia. Tipoff at Exactech Arena at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center is set for 2 p.m. EST.
In their most recent outing, the Gators earned a 75-61 victory over South Alabama on Dec. 7. SEC Player of the Year candidate Liv McGill delivered a standout performance with 32 points, 17 of which came in the second quarter. Her scoring surge flipped a five-point deficit after the opening period into a 13-point Florida advantage at halftime. Freshman "Nidi" Yiech contributed her first career double-double in the win, finishing with 14 points and a career-high 10 rebounds.
McGill has now recorded three games of 30 or more points this season, making her one of just two players in Division I Women's Basketball to reach that mark (joining Iowa State’s Audi Brooks). As of Tuesday, Dec. 9, the Minnesota native ranks second nationally in scoring (27.3 ppg), sixth in steals per game (4.22), and 33rd in assists per game (5.4).
Me'Arah O'Neal's 14.1 points per game, and Laila Reynolds' 13.4 points per game give the Gators a trio of double-digit scorers.
The NCAA released its initial NET rankings on Nov. 30, with Florida opening the season at No. 40 nationally. Ahead of Sunday’s matchup with the Wolves, the Gators hold a NET ranking of 48.
West Georgia is in the second year of its five-year transition from Division II to Division I, and this contest marks the first-ever meeting between the two programs. The Wolves previously made five NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Tournament appearances and captured the Gulf South Tournament Championship in 2024. In their first Division I campaign last season, West Georgia finished 13-17 overall, including a 7-11 mark in Atlantic Sun Conference play.
This year, the Wolves are off to a 4-3 start, powered by four double-digit scorers: Asia Donald (17.0 ppg), Jasmine Jones (15.4), Sydne Tolbert (13.3), and Destiny Jones (11.0). Grace O’Gara is close to joining that group, averaging 9.7 points per game. Depth remains a challenge, as those five players account for 78 percent of the team’s minutes, 86 percent of its field goal attempts, and 91 percent of its scoring output.
The Wolves and Gators share one common opponent in non-conference play—Georgia Tech. Florida defeated the Yellow Jackets 64-56 at the Grand Cayman Classic over Thanksgiving weekend, while West Georgia earned a 69-60 victory against Tech on Nov. 19.
