GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Florida women’s basketball team is aiming to become just the seventh squad in program history to open a season with four straight victories when they face Samford on Thursday, Nov. 13. The game will tip off at 7 p.m. EST inside Exactech Arena at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center.

The last Florida team to begin 4-0 was the 2019-20 group. Prior to that, the 2000-01 Gators opened with nine consecutive wins before suffering their first loss, tying the program record originally set in 1983-84 and later matched in 1984-85 and 1995-96. Another notable start came in 1997-98, when Florida began 4-0 before the streak ended.

Sophomore point guard Liv McGill has delivered one of the most remarkable season starts in program history, averaging 27.7 points, 7.3 assists, 6.0 rebounds, and 5.0 steals. Her performance earned recognition as the USBWA National Player of the Week and SEC Player of the Week. As of Nov. 10, McGill ranked fourth nationally in scoring, tied for 20th in assists, and tied for 10th in steals. Within the SEC, she leads in scoring, is tied for fourth in assists, second in steals, and tied for second in made three-pointers.

She’s been complemented by sophomore forward Me'Arah O'Neal, who has opened the season with three straight double-doubles, averaging 16.0 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 1.67 blocks while shooting 60 percent from the field. Junior guard Laila Reynolds has added 13.7 points per game and 3.0 steals, highlighted by her perfect 10-for-10 performance at the free throw line against Jacksonville on Nov. 10, setting new career highs.

Thursday’s contest also carries personal significance for Samford Head Coach Matt Wise, whose mother coached Florida volleyball for 34 seasons. Wise himself previously served as a graduate assistant with the Florida men’s basketball program during its back-to-back Elite Eight runs in the early 2010s.

Samford enters the matchup at 1-1, with a season-opening 75-53 win over Montevallo followed by an 80-46 loss at Nebraska. Sophomore guard Briana Rivera leads the Bulldogs in scoring at 16.0 points per game, while redshirt senior center Emily Snoddy (née Bowman) and freshman forward Carla Baguda pace the team in rebounding with 9.0 and 8.5 boards per game, respectively.

Samford (1-1)

A Florida victory would:

  • Improve the Gators to 4-0 this season and 19-2 at home in November under Head Coach Kelly Rae Finley.
  • Mark the first 4-0 start since 2000-01, when Florida won nine straight to tie the program record for consecutive wins to open a season (originally set in 1983-84 and later matched in 1984-85 and 1995-96).
  • Extend Florida’s all-time record against Samford to 3-0.
