GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Florida Gators women’s basketball head coach Kelly Rae Finley has announced the hiring of Fred Williams as an assistant coach. Williams brings decades of experience at both the collegiate and professional levels, most recently serving as associate head coach at Auburn University.

“Fred is a phenomenal addition to our staff,” said Finley. “His extensive background in both the WNBA and college basketball, his success in developing players, and his commitment to building winning cultures make him a perfect fit for our program. Our players will greatly benefit from his insights and mentorship.”

A native of Los Angeles, Williams has built a coaching career that spans more than 40 years. At Auburn, he played a key role in leading the Tigers to the 2024 NCAA Tournament, focusing on defense and player development.

His professional résumé includes head coaching stints in the WNBA with the Los Angeles Sparks, Tulsa Shock, and Atlanta Dream—where he guided the Dream to the 2013 WNBA Finals. Williams has worked with numerous All-Stars and Olympians and previously held coaching roles at the University of Southern California, including a two-year run as head coach from 1995 to 1997.

Known for his ability to revitalize programs and nurture talent, Williams helped multiple WNBA teams reach the playoffs and build winning cultures. He’s also contributed to NBA organizations such as the Utah Jazz and Sacramento Kings in scouting and development capacities.

A graduate of Boise State University, Williams has earned respect across the basketball community for his strategic acumen and leadership. His career includes 144 WNBA victories and a reputation for excellence in defense and postseason preparation.
